I woke up and had to dig my car out of this mess. Then on my way to work I discovered that the funny noise my transmission has been making has evolved into a horrifying death growl. And now I just accidentally nuked my entire Ubuntu install by trying to uninstall Python like a dumbass.

So what you’re saying is you’ll be getting that BRZ sooner than planned

I didn’t have to dig my car out but I did have to trudge through over a foot of new snow which has no signs of letting up. I did see a porsche out there though. Ha! this is a terrible picture, zoomed in, looking through a window with an iphone 4.

I think it means I might have to face having my soul slowly sucked out by my sister’s CVT Impreza until I can afford a BRZ. If I skip Ice Racing and Auto crossing this year I might be able to make 2nd last for a while but if I run the ITTs which start this weekend all bets are off. I’m honestly kinda surprised it’s made it to almost 160k on the original trans. They tend to pop around 120-140k.

If you were uninstalling to try to change the Python version, check out pyenv.
Are you gonna replace the trans or try to baby it through to your next car?

I was planning on buying a BRZ within the next year. Babying it is the logical path forward but ice racing and autocross season is coming and I’m in withdrawals. I would put a Cooper S 6 speed with a limited slip in it but I’m not sure it makes sense to be putting almost twice what the car is worth into it. It's really just poor timing as I'm still 8+ months away from being able to afford to do anything about it.
Ubuntu was just my own idiocy. I was trying to roll back one version to match the version my friend was using in development and kinda forgot that Ubuntu heavily relies on Python. I had been uninstalling a bunch of stuff so it didn't give me a Y/N prompt and I didn't realize anything was wrong until icons started disappearing from my dock.

Set up and/or install Timeshift for your Ubuntu install! It’s like Windows Restore Points in a sense, so if you bork something or something gets borked, you just go back to the last valid Timeshift save!

It probably would’ve been quicker if you parked in one of the city garages. Digging out sucks

That might have helped if literally anything worked. It didn’t even get to a shell so I’m having to reconfigure from a week old backup.

I should have taken the parking ticket and put it in the Gutterson Garage overnight but I didn’t even think of that one. Some form of covered parking is on my must have list when I move apartments next summer.

Good luck. They’re few and far between.

I am pretty sure Timeshift works on Ubuntu? I use Mint 19.1 MATE and it’s Ubuntu-based and comes with Timeshift installed by default, so I imagine it would work with Ubuntu. That being said, I am not sure how recovering using Timeshift works as I have (knock on wood) never had to use it for a recovery yet!

I haven’t tried it either but I can’t imagine it being super helpful when you don’t even have a shell anymore.

Ouch, that is rough timing. Would you not trust a salvaged or rebuilt trans?
P yenv makes it really easy to have lots and lots of Python versions installed and use different ones for different projects. Check it out!

I could go the salvage route but that means getting another 5 speed. The 5 speed isn’t a very strong transmission and a replacement would fail eventually. What I would want to do is put in a used Cooper S transmission which would get me shorter ratios (something the underpowered engine needs) and a bulletproof transmission. That would require additional new parts (clutch assembly, driveshafts, shift linkage) over a 5 speed but be a better solution. The S transmission also allows me to find one with an LSD, something not offered in the 5 speed. If my incompetent butt is the one doing the work a replacement 5 speed would probably total about $1500 and several weekends of work and a 6 speed somewhere around $2000-2500. If I have someone do the work for me it would probably be $3500-5000. The car is probably worth $2000 and I’m not sure what my future plans for it are.

It’s about 18 inches on open ground. Campus is super windy so we ended up with about 30 up against the cars and about 26 in the piles left behind the cars by the plow.
